Never a Bridge Too Far!

The Wallace and Gromit 10K tour continued with the Lancaster Three Bridges 10K.

Usual early pick for this one and nice bright sunny weather as we set off in the Wallace and Gromit battle bus (a.k.a. my battered blue Ford Ka which always seems to find its own way to our races).

The weather started to change as we headed up the M6 and not for the better with heavy rain and strong winds buffering us as we made our way to Salt Ayre sports centre, HQ for this event.

We landed, parked up and got our numbers, but at least the rain had stopped though quite a cold wind had whipped up in its place. A really flat course this one…yes, honestly Derrick, no undulations in this one!

The start is just away from the race track and after pre-race instructions and a minute's silence observed for the Boston Marathon we were off at 11am prompt. Nice fast start with the strong wind behind as we made our way down the cycle path and off in the direction of Lancaster centre.

The giveaway is in the name and we went over the first bridge at about the mile mark, still with a tailwind making for good spilt times.

On into Lancaster centre and taking in some nice sites at the river side before the turn back at the 3 mile marker. At this point you come across the old bridge and run up what would be about four flights of stairs to meet the canal tow path; very energy-sapping but you just have to run it off. Homeward bound now and we started to realise how strong the wind was and with that spilt times were creeping upwards.

Onwards to the last and final bridge of the three crossed at the five mile marker, a nice long straight run to the 6 mile marker, and just a final lap of the running track to complete.

Good times for both myself and Wallace as we both beat last year's times. Decent reception for the finishers and a good spread put on which is always a nice touch when we come to race here. This is a great fast course and maybe with better weather conditions has good PB potential.

Onwards and upwards for Wallace and Gromit with the start of the Grand Prix runs next Sunday. Hameldon Hill here we come!
