Austwick Amble
TAC Summer Series Race 3 of 8
We would like to welcome runners to the Austwick Amble Fell race. The race is held in conjunction with the Austwick Street Market festivities. The race is registered with the FRA and organised under their guidelines.
The senior race starts and finishes in Austwick village centre (GR768684) and is run over a loop circuit of approximately 8 miles/13 km covering a total ascent of 1200 ft/370m. It is categorised by the FRA as category B (medium).
The outward journey over the first 4 miles passes through the beautiful Crummockdale limestone scenery and briefly joins Sulber Nick (which connects the Yorkshire peaks of Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough). The return leg descends slowly back through spectacular scenery to Austwick, and to the start point on the village green.
In response to suggestions made in the past by some runners, we have decided to slightly modify the senior course this year. The tarmac road back into the village will be partially replaced by a route over fields and stiles. The overall length of the race will be largely unaffected however. Juniors are unaffected by the change.
The fastest recorded times ovet the "old" course are 48:52 (men – L Athersmith - 2011) and 57:05 (women – C Leah - 2006) although the revised circuit will result in 2 new course records!
The Junior U16 race is run over a shorter distance of 2.25 miles / 4km, and runners are required to reach checkpoint #1 before returning to the village. Fastest time is approx 15 minutes.
The Junior U12 race is approx 1.25 miles / 2km. Fastest time is approx 12 minutes.
