Wallace & Gromit Go Atomic at Chernobyl 10K

CHRIS QUIGLEY 28 JAN 2013

Glad to be back after a period of illness, both Wallace and I having been off colour of late with the dreaded man flu, me being confined to the warmth of the dog basket for a week or so.

With the recent weather and the downfall of snow Friday we weren't sure if the race would be on. Cue the thaw and heavy rain overnight, I opened the curtains Sunday morning and hey presto, green grass and no snow!

Picked Wallace up and made our way to the "Welcome Inn" pub to collect our numbers up. As we drove over to Preston we even saw a bit of blue sky and a strange, bright yellow object up there, though it was very, very windy.

Having done this race before on the quiet, I knew it was quite a tester of a 10k, not quite a straightforward road race. Eleven bells and we were off from outside the pub, making our way out from the estate and onto the main road. This then led to a steep drop on a trail path down to the river at the bottom, which is were the fun starts.

Once on the path it's a one mile muddy slog through deep puddles to get to the main road, the only saving grace being the strong tailwind. Even off the path there was one more muddy pond to run through making any new trainers acquired over Christmas no longer look new.

Back onto the main road at the three mile mark and then the turn for home; this is where we realised how strong the wind really was on the day! I's a long two miles before you hit the main road again, going over the bridge and back up the trail path.

Glad to hit the five mile marker and at least get the wind behind for the last run back through the estate to the finish. Not really a PB day given the weather and it's a tough little 10k to say the least.

Nice to bump into fellow Trawden runner Adam Howard and also a big thanks to Autumn for the cheers on near the end. Dewsbury 10k next For Wallace and Gromit.
