Weets 40th Anniversary Fell Race

PAUL BROWN 13 JUN 2011

A contingent of Trawden runners put in an appearance at the 40th anniversary of this event that has been subject to much change over the years.

Even though Weets isn't as imposing as Pendle, this tough local race packs a punch with more ascent than the Barley Cabin race, which some of us had run only the day before.

An unceremonious start saw us plodding up a metalled farm road before veering right across heather and enclosed fields, with our legs feeling the strain of a demanding first mile. A brief and welcome descent on a good track led to a hairpin turn into more fields that ultimately climbed to Weets summit.

From here we immediately lost altitude down the steep northern flank of the hill before skirting right (where I took a nice little detour) to head back up to rejoin the main route and back track all the way to the finish. Matt and I had another close finish almost to the line, with Andy and John coming home shortly after.

A special mention must go to Lee who gallantly accompanied his wife Sophie around her first race - and only third ever run apparently - and she even pipped him to the post (sorry Lee, we saw you finishing last!).
