To PB or Not To PB

After the recent Grand Prix series came to an end with the presentation at Premier League Burnley Football Club, it was once again a return to the bread-and-butter racing and the local 10K scene.

There's been quite a lot of talk about the Birchwood 10K in recent weeks because it's advertised as a fast and flat race with some good runners in attendance, making it ideal for potential PBs.

Quite a crew of Humbugs made their way over to meet up at the Birchwood Retail Centre, which is both the start and finish point for this race. This being after the night before when there had been mention of a route change that would involve more footpaths than the previous years.

Well over 800 runners lined up for this one on a very windy main road. At least the rain had relented as we received our pre-race instructions before the start.

The hooter went and we were off! I can only go off last year's course that was mainly road, which this year's race did follow for a short while before entering onto Tarmac footpaths that weaved in and out. No matter which way the course turned the wind really was a factor and seemed to be pushing you back.

The race continued until at about 6 km it joined last year's route back onto the road and for a few slight hills taking you over the motorways before the turn for home.

One last rise then back on the footpaths before the home run and a sprint finish to the line.

Not the most scenic of routes but maybe if the weather had been a bit calmer then just maybe that PB could have been, but not every race can be a PB, it all depends on the day.

On a final note this is a well organized and well marshalled race with a big bath towel for finishing and a bunch of flowers for the ladies - even Ashley got some too!
